Wired has learned that Baby Shark Cake has been valued at a staggering $5 million, by the very people who bought it at the time it was sold for $1,600.
That’s a $5.5 million price tag.
“The Baby Shark cake is one of the most talked about items in the cake world,” a buyer from New Zealand told Wired.
“It’s definitely the most famous cake of all time.
The sales record is still going strong.”
The cake was sold in New Zealand to a buyer in China who has since sold it to a customer in India.
“I think it’s one of those items that will forever be known as a cake that made people smile,” the buyer said.
“People would come and buy it and laugh, but I’d still be surprised if it sold for that amount.”
The buyer added that Baby Shark had sold for about $2,500 to a Chinese buyer.
The cake is now in New York, but a representative for the New York State Department of Financial Services (DFS) declined to comment.
Baby Shark’s price tag is based on the assumption that Baby Sharks cake was a hit with New Zealanders.
“We were quite surprised by the cake’s sales,” the source said.
According to the seller, the cake was “quite popular in New Zeland and was selling well.
